Direct B.E.B.S.S.S!!® : energy use and production of BIOGAS FROM LANDFILL

MARCOPOLO ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP designs, builds and operates facilities for the safety of landfills through the purification of biogas which would be toxic and harmful, and its use to produce alternative energy.

Over the years, MEG has developed advanced technologies and specifications for drainage, pumping and energy recovery of biogas from landfill, becoming a leader in this field.
The whole system, devised by MEG researchers is based on a complex mechanism of gas capture and integrated into the plan to close the landfill. The biogas is diverted into the sewage system and, through a chemical process, mostly physical, is purified of many pollutants, liquid and gassy, and then used for co-generation, through specific eight-cycle internal combustion engines, capable of obtaining energy efficiency, by an average of 40%. The resulting green electricity is sold to the national grid, while the thermal energy produced by cogeneration can be used for district heating.

MARCOPOLO ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP has over 40 active installations in Italy, built and managed on their own and a dozen under construction; in Portugal, one active and one under construction.

What is BIOGAS?

The decomposition of the waste found in landfills produces a gas rich of methane, commonly called biogas. This gas is a problem but at the same time a resource, if properly used. It must be captured and can be used as fuel in cogeneration plants to produce electricity and heat for the electric network and thermal energy to be used in district heating plants. If impossible to recover energy, it can be disposed by controlled combustion. MARCOPOLO ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP provides a double service: it produces green energy, detracting from fossil, destroying a pollutant such as biogas.
